Education

Improved literacy and numeracy skills will increase staff confidence and effectiveness. Supporting employees when this need arises will also improve their motivation and loyalty to the organisation.

  • Improved literacy and numeracy prepares staff for vocational training
  • English courses for speakers of foreign languages dramatically improve performance
  • Courses cause minimal workplace disruption

Reading, writing and maths form a vital part of all our lives, no matter what kind of job we do. How competent we are at using these “Skills for Life” affects our confidence, our ability to do our job and our quality of life. There are many adults who, for a variety of reasons, did not reach a particular standard in English and Maths at school. AUK can help these people to improve their literacy and/or numeracy skills, so that they become more confident and therefore more effective employees. We also offer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses to support the development needs of people for whom English is not their first language.

It may be that your staff would benefit from some Skills for Life training before moving on to a vocational qualification. The increased confidence which comes from achieving a Skills for Life qualification will enable them to complete a vocational qualification more easily.

For some jobs, the development of Skills for Life is an end in itself. At AUK we have helped hundreds of Teaching Assistants in schools to upgrade their literacy and numeracy skills, enabling them to make a much more significant contribution in the classroom.

Confidence leads to competence: our approach is to support and encourage candidates to learn through a variety of flexible teaching methods. As well as being fully qualified, our tutors are also patient, imaginative and totally committed. The rapport they develop with a group wins equal commitment from the learners and achievement rates are excellent.

Candidates on our literacy and numeracy courses attend for two hours a week over 10 weeks. ESOL courses require two hours a week for 15 weeks. The benefits of these courses, to employers as well as to individuals, are significant, immediate and permanent.
